We explain it in “How does it work at bol?”

You’ve probably experienced it: you order several items at once, and they still arrive in separate packages. Why is that? It’s a question we regularly receive through our customer service. And we completely understand why. In our “How does it work at bol” series, we answer frequently asked questions about complex topics in a clear and simple way. We show what happens behind the scenes on our platform: things you don’t always see as a customer, but definitely notice. So: are you curious why your order sometimes arrives in multiple deliveries? We're happy to explain!
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
Who ships it? Bol is a platform
Not everything you buy on bol is sold by bol itself. More than half of our assortment comes from partners. Some of them store and ship their products via bol, while others handle storage and delivery themselves. In that case, the items don’t come from bol at all: they are shipped directly from the partner to you.
The result? If you order items sold by bol and items from a partner who manages their own logistics, your order may be shipped from two different locations.
Where is it stored? Bol has six different warehouses
Over the years, bol has grown significantly, making it impossible to store everything in a single distribution centre. The items we ship ourselves are spread across multiple locations: large warehouses for most of our assortment, specialised warehouses for XL items such as refrigerators, and a separate warehouse for books.
If the items you ordered are stored in different locations, bringing them together first would be inefficient and time‑consuming. To ensure fast delivery and reduce our environmental impact, we keep transport distances as short as possible.
What fits together? A pen and a table don’t fit in the same box
Large items simply can’t be combined with smaller ones. Furniture and heavy goods are also delivered by specialised transport partners, meaning they follow a different delivery route than standard parcels.
When is it shipped? Delivery times can vary
Not every item in your order is always ready to ship at the same time. To deliver on our promises, we sometimes choose to send the item that’s ready first, rather than making you wait longer than necessary.
HOW WE HANDLE THIS
Wherever possible, we try to combine parcels. Popular items are deliberately stored at multiple locations so they can be shipped together more often. Between two of our largest warehouses, we’ve even installed a conveyor belt, allowing items from both locations to be sent together.
And did you know that if items have different delivery times, you can choose combined delivery at checkout? This may mean waiting a little longer, but it also means fewer boxes at your door.
In short: we do our best to combine parcels whenever possible. If your order still arrives in multiple deliveries, you now know why.
